Through powerful learning experiences and regular reflections, students will activate and develop a set of useful competencies. The term competency embodies skills, knowledge and personal attributes. Skills can be directly taught and are usually specific to a task. For example, being able to edit a video is a technical skill. According to the Cambridge dictionary, Knowledge relates to the understanding of or information about a subject that you get by experience or study. Finally, personal attributes or dispositions refer to the habits of mind or character traits of a person. Competency is a broad term that can be defined as the ability to use a combination of knowledge, skills and personal attributes in various situations. Download the EPYP Brochure A MEANINGFUL EARLY CHILDHOOD & ELEMENTARY PROGRAM IC empowers the whole child, so they become lifelong learners who thrive in all aspects of their life and easily adapt as the world changes. The IC program is inquiry-based, technology-wise and personalized to embark every student on an engaging, meaningful, joyful and empowering learning journey. The IC Program is research-informed and specifically designed to meet the developmental needs of Early Childhood and Elementary students. The IC Program starts in Preschool and is also highly compatible with local and national requirements. KEY ELEMENTS OF THE EPYP PROGRAM Learning Portfolio Learning is a process. Students develop an ongoing Learning Portfolio to document their journey. Not only does this portfolio display the learner's achievements but its goal is to show the entire process, including the productive struggles experienced by every learner. Capturing the whole learning process is necessary to reflect and improve. Collective Action Students participate in a collective action, which aims at responding to an identified challenge that could be either local or global, small or big. Global Citizenship Every student learns an additional language and participates in a Global Awareness program about Social Justice, Environment, or any other issue relevant to their age. Transdisciplinarity All units are concept-based and include transdisciplinary elements and students are encouraged to make connections and go beyond a fragmented vision of learning. MERGULHE NO NOSSO PROGRAMA Assessment is intended to support the learner’s growth and shape learning. It is designed to give students a wide variety of opportunities to demonstrate their understanding and to develop their knowledge, curriculum skills and lifelong competencies. The student's portfolio will have a variety of artifacts of learning. What do we mean by Formative Assessments? They play a fundamental role in the process of learning. Students use formative assessments to improve their knowledge, understanding and skills by getting feedback, self-assess, reflect and define strategies for further improvements. Formative assessments constitute important milestones that inform the educator on where the learner is so that they can give students feedback and plan the next moves. They are generally quick and simple ways to get a clear indication of what students know or are able to do and understand at a certain time. However, for formative assessments to be effective, educators need to create opportunities and allow time for reflection, self-assessment and feedback. How do we assess students? In the IComprehensive approach, educators use Learning Outcomes - or standards- to focus on essential learning and competencies. Schools are offered the possibility to keep their current grading policy as it is or to integrate the IComprehensive assessment system by which educators determine how students meet every learning Outcome: Learning Outcomes IC Learning Standards are concise, clear and student-centred criteria based on strategic competencies which mirror the different development stages of students as they pursue their growth over time. At every stage of their development, students strengthen their competencies and acquire new ones at their own pace. This process, which does not take place in the same way for every learner, continues during their adult life. Learning Standards are measurable. They describe what students are expected to know, understand, be and do as a result of a learning experience. They can be easily aligned with local curricula and are mostly used by educators to: - Plan learning experiences and assessment opportunities - Monitor student progress throughout the learning process and make adjustments if necessary. A COMPETENCY-DRIVEN APPROACH organized around fOUR main categories The learning process does not start or end in a predetermined place and time. These competencies empower students to grow as active, adaptable, socially aware and self-motivated learners all along their life both personally and professionally so that they can contribute to the rapidly evolving world in a meaningful and purposeful way. - COMMUNICATION AND CREATIVITY COMPETENCY : Communicating, Collaborating and Mastering Multiple Literacies. This competency helps us confidently share our projects, ideas, questions and understandings in many different ways and contexts. Communication is organically linked to collaboration and can therefore positively impact our social and emotional well-being and contribute to building more genuine and trusting relationships - PERSONAL AND SOCIAL COMPETENCY : Personal Awareness, Cultural Identity and Social Awareness. These are the set of abilities that relate to how a student identifies and connects in the world. This competency encompasses a wide spectrum of what students need to thrive both individually and as contributing members of their community, to understand themselves and how they relate to others. - THINKING AND INQUIRY COMPETENCY : Thinking, Questioning, Wondering, Exploring, Researching, Reflecting and Documenting. There are many different thinking skills that one can use depending on the learning experience. It is important to acknowledge that thinking is complex and multidimensional. Students need to be able to identify, understand and have an opportunity to use thoughtful approaches in various situations, be inquisitive and ask questions. - SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES : Knowing relevant content, Conceptual Understanding, and area-specific competencies. Some competencies are closely tied to a specific area of learning like Mathematics or Science and will be developed through learning experiences that are connected to these areas.

IC builds relationships with educational institutions with the genuine intention to know them well and meet their unique needs. We are not just evaluating you at the end, we are with you during the whole process and beyond. The IC Continuous Learning Cycle CONTINUOUS LEARNING CYCLE 1. ACTIVATION : Schools define personalized goals, plan actionable steps and schedule professional development. 2. IMPLEMENTATION: Schools undertake personalized professional development and document their learning journey. The IC team provides the school with ongoing support and feedback. 3. REFLECTION : The IC consultant studies the school's portfolio and self-reflection documents before connecting with the school and reporting back with suggestions regarding the final phase. 4. PROGRESSION: Schools implement the actions defined after the reflection phase, participate in targeted professional learning and document their learning journey. The IC team provides the school with ongoing feedback. At the end of this phase, a visit is organized on-site to determine wrap-up the first cycle. That's why we created a worldwide inquiry-based, competency-driven and technology-wise K12 program whose goal is to build a transformative culture of learning that empowers learners to thrive in all aspects of their life. Our mission is to empower schools to develop a program where learners foster the lifelong competencies they need to thrive in their life. Introduction to the IC framework The central focus is the lifelong growth of every learner to pursue their aspiration accomplished through inquiry learning, purposeful use of technology and integrating overarching forces of environment, languages, time, relationships and external factors. This competency-driven program has been designed so that schools can create an inspiring, inclusive, meaningful, inviting and stimulating learning environment. LIFELONG LEARNER Lifelong Competencies The learner is at the heart of the ICC program framework because our approach is learner-centred and emphasizes that learning is an ongoing and holistic process made of many struggles and achievements. As Renee Brown says in her Manifesto of the Brave and Brokenhearted : "We are the authors of our lives". Indeed, the learning process does not start nor end in a predetermined place and time. Through powerful learning experiences and regular reflections, students will activate and develop a set of useful competencies. The term competency embodies skills, knowledge and personal attributes. Skills can be directly taught and are usually specific to a task. For example, being able to edit a video is a technical skill. According to the Cambridge dictionary, Knowledge relates to the understanding of or information about a subject that you get by experience or study. Finally, personal attributes or dispositions refer to the habits of mind or character traits of a person. Competency is a broad term that can be defined as the ability to use a combination of knowledge, skills and personal attributes in various situations. These competencies are empowering them to grow as active, adaptable, socially aware and self-motivated learners all along their life both personally and professionally so that they can contribute to the rapidly evolving world in a meaningful and purposeful way. The first of the five core competencies is Communication and Language. It helps us confidently share our projects, ideas, questions and understandings with others in many different ways and contexts. Communication is organically linked to collaboration and can therefore positively impact our social and emotional well-being and contribute to building more genuine and trusting relationships. The second one is Personal and Social Competency, which is defined in the British Columbia's curriculum as: “the set of abilities that relate to students' identity in the world, both as individuals and as members of their community and society. Personal and social competency encompasses what students need to thrive as individuals, to understand and care about themselves and others, and to find and achieve their purposes in the world.” The third core competency is Thinking & Inquiring. There are many different thinking skills that one can use depending on the learning experience. It is important to acknowledge that Thinking is complex, multidimensional and requires time. As the Harvard Project Zero team and particularly Professor Ron Ritchhart explain in their remarkable work, thinking is a critical component of understanding. Moreover, for students to develop thinking competency, they need to be able to identify, understand and have an opportunity to use the different thinking kinds in various situations, be inquisitive and ask questions. Creativity and Digital competency are critical in a changing world where automated tasks have become the norm. The added value of individuals comes from their capacity to create original artifacts and use technology in a purposeful and responsible way. Moreover, all human beings take advantage at any age of being able to implement healthy habits, being aware of all their senses, developing their motor and physical skills and being attentive to their mental health. Finally, some competencies are closely tight to a specific area of learning like Mathematics or Science and will be developed through learning experiences that are connected to these subjects. We owe every learner to empower them to develop the lifelong competencies they need to thrive in their present and future life." LEARNING PROCESS Learning experiences and Portfolio Learning is a process and it happens though powerful inquiry-based learning experiences alongside ongoing reflection and a purposeful documentation of the process with the use of a portfolio. Creating rich and powerful learning experiences to have learners DO, UNDERSTAND and KNOW requires deep thinking and preparation, but also the capacity for the educator to make adjustments, be responsive, release control, observe, facilitate and reflect. Powerful learning experiences allow students to have some genuine agency and choice , ask questions, explore, generate ideas, try new things, make mistakes, investigate to authentic contexts, collaborate, create, go deep, feel curious, challenged and joyful, organically apply technological skills, share and reflect. Most of all, they are designed to amplify and personalize learning and foster core and curricular competencies and different types of literacy which altogether highly contribute to the learner’s growth and well-being. OVERARCHING FORCES Time, Environment, Relationships, Languages and External forces The outer layer of the framework represents the overarching forces which operate in every community, school and classroom. Time , Environment , Language, Relationships and External factors are important cultural markers which can shape safe, effective, inspiring and engaging conditions for learning to thrive. These five forces also highly contribute to our well-being and social emotional development. In order for them not to become obstacles or constraints, we need to be fully aware of their influence and think deeply about how we might be able to monitor, adapt and tailor them to build an impactful culture of learning.

HOW TO BECOME AN ACCREDITED SCHOOL? PHASE 1: CONNECTION 1. Schools show interest by filling out the online contact form on the IComprehensive website. 2. Schools receive the Accreditation guide and a meeting can be scheduled if needed. 3. Schools apply for Candidacy by filling out the online Candidacy Application form and pay the non-refundable candidacy fees. Although we believe that most schools should be given the opportunity to be accredited, the candidacy application will have to meet the following criteria: - The school must be a legal entity and have a minimum of two consecutive grade levels. - The school mission and values should be compatible with those of IC. - The school must have paid the candidacy fees. - The school has appointed a member of the staff to be the Project Leader. - The school must decide on a date to start the Activation Phase. Length: 1 - 4 weeks If meeting the Candidacy requirements, Schools become candidates , pay the candidate fees and can now move to the Activation phase. Every step of this phase shall be documented in a school portfolio . In the first 4 weeks, Candidate schools develop a tailored Accreditation Plan with the support of their IC facilitator, which includes the following actions: 1. Complete the self-assessment report so that we can tailor the activation phase to your needs and context. 2. Create an Activation Team of usually 10 to 18 members, including at least: two senior leaders, two members of the school community, two students and four educators from different levels and subject areas. All the members of this team of “activators”, except students, must take the Introduction to the IC program course 1.0. 3. The Activation team establishes a Digital and Physical Project Nest which is a place, open to the whole community where all stakeholders can share ideas, questions and evidence about the process. Schools will be benefiting from the support of their IC facilitator and will receive a detailed Project nest guide. 4. Set up actionable goals to meet the accreditation standards and define a timeline . 5. Plan Professional Learning so that 20% of staff, including the pedagogical leadership, participate to at least one IC learning opportunity (course or workshop) before the Accreditation Validation takes place. 6. Schedule your monthly check-in sessions with your IC facilitator. Implement your actionable goals and document the process. PHASE 2: ACTIVATION Length: 8 - 12 months The date of the Accreditation visit should be defined at the beginning of the Activation phase and be included in the school timeline. 1. The Activation Team and the IC facilitator both create and submit a reflection of the whole accreditation journey at least three weeks ahead of the accreditation team visit. The reflection along with the school portfolio and the self-assessment report will help the visiting team to get a better understanding of the school. 2. An accreditation team of 2-5 members, including the facilitator, spends 2-5 days on campus to visit the school and meet various stakeholders. The size of the team and the length of their visit will depend on the school’s demographics. 3. Following their visit, a final decision regarding the accreditation is taken within three weeks.
